What is BIS Hallmark Registration?

BIS Hallmark Registration is a regulatory license under the BIS hallmarking scheme for gold and silver ornaments and artefacts. Hallmarking certifies the purity of these products in India. The BIS hallmarking scheme, established by the Government of India, ensures the accuracy and reliability of precious metal products sold in the country. Manufacturers, importers, and retailers can legally display the BIS hallmark on their gold and silver products by obtaining hallmark registration, indicating compliance with the prescribed purity standards.

The hallmark registration process involves a rigorous assessment of the applicant's manufacturing facilities, quality control measures, and product testing procedures. To obtain the license, applicants must meet stringent criteria set by the BIS, including maintaining proper records, adhering to manufacturing standards, and possessing adequate infrastructure for hallmarking.

Testing Required for Hallmarked Jewellery

Homogeneity Testing : This involves testing samples to ensure they meet BIS regulatory standards. Samples are tested minutely and evaluated on various parameters.

Purity Testing : Purity is the most critical parameter for hallmarking gold and silver jewellery.

Individual Item Marking : Marking every item individually is the last step. Jewellery is marked using either a laser or a press and can also be hand-marked for its quality.
